Hoosier Open Jiu Jitsu Tournament, 2016

On Saturday, I competed in only my second tournament. I have been training in jiu jitsu for about a year and four months now. It may even be a little less than that, because we take time off every now and then to train jeet kune do and sparring/fighting. My first tournament was no gi and this was my first tournament with my gi. I learned there is a huge difference between no gi and gi and there are things I need to work on. However, I think I did pretty well and placed third in my weight division. Seeing as I didn't grapple until later in the afternoon, I spent my down time taking photos of my fellow classmates and a few random competitors who were on the same mats. Here are some of those photos, as well as a few photos of me during my division!

Slaven Wedding

Congratulations, Kacie and Devin!

We Are Stardust?

I've seen some pretty great work from other photographers in the ways of double exposure. I haven't done much with them, besides one, maybe two, portraits. The other night, I was feeling adventurous after reading an article about humans being composed of the same elements as stars and wanted to try something with a self-portrait of mine. I'm happy with the way it turned out, but I'm curious what your thoughts are! Let me know what you guys think!

Nights in Rodanthe

Too Jiu-Jit to Quit

I was not able to participate in my Combative MMA class, which focuses mostly on jiu jitsu, due to a photo session. I went late and decided to turn class into another photo session. Here are some of the photos!

Living like dandelions

"I was a dandelion puff. Some saw the beauty in me and stooped quietly to admire my innocence. Others saw the potential of what I could do for them, so they uprooted me, seeking to shape me around their needs. They blew at my head, scattering my hair from the roots, changing me to suit them. Yet still others saw me as something that was unworthy and needed to be erased." - Nicole Bailey-Williams

The Birthday of Eternity

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”
― Thomas Campbell

Colorful tissue paper lanterns danced through the crisp evening sky with hearts of flickering flames, their moments of vitality quietly measured. Many drifted away with little effort until they were only a tiny glow in the distance, while others were not as fortunate. Life, like tissue paper lanterns, is fleeting. You cannot know whether the lantern will travel a great distance or if the flames of its heart will begin to fade. Though the lanterns may cease to exist in one length of time or another, you will always have the memory.

I had the incredible opportunity to be a part of a celebration of life. I did not have the fortune to know Kristin before his passing. However, as I watched his friends and family gather together, I learned one definite fact: he is loved. He is loved so deeply and by so many, he will live on in their hearts forever.

Once a shy, self-conscious girl; now, a confident woman

People change. It's inevitable. As I look back at how I was only a year ago, I can see I have grown. I remember having a photo assignment due in one of my classes that required an "event" of some kind; it could be anything as long as "something" was happening. My boyfriend had been taking a combative mma class for about a year and suggested I photograph his class for my assignment. After sitting in, I realized this may be what I need in my life.

I've always felt a void after graduating high school. For as long as I can remember, I've been involved in a sport. My interests stretched from playing catch with my dad and brother to volleyball to basketball to track to attempting to play football (my parents wouldn't allow me as I was much too tiny) to tennis. There was never a year or season of down time, that is, until college.

I've always been one to play sports for the fun of them and felt college would be far too competitive for me to enjoy them. For five years, I put my activities on hold and dove into my schoolwork and spent my spare time working to pay tuition. When my graduation date was finally approaching, I was aching for any extracurricular activity I could partake in.

I attended the next combative mma class and fell in love. Oddly enough, I love the competitive aspect; I love knowing I'm learning how to defend myself- knowing that if anyone were to try to attack me that I would know what to do; I love knowing how to throw a punch, do an armbar or take down someone who is bigger than myself. We call it "training to be a ninja."

A year later, this class is still my favorite part of every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. I've learned so much about myself in the process, tried things I've never tried before, and am better than I thought I would be at a few things (specifically muay thai)! It's been hard work and I still have a lot to work on, but I'm in a much better place now.

Lamb Family Session

I've known this family since I was in middle school. Over the years, they've become like a second family to me. I'm so thankful they decided to come to me to get their family photos done! I hope you enjoy them!

Strahan Anniversary Session

Paul and Jessica married last October but chose to not have a wedding. For their first year anniversary, they asked me to take some photos for them so they'll have some together. I was more than happy to photograph them together because they claim they never take photos well. I hope I proved them wrong with these! ;)

Serene Get Away

With the retail holiday season approaching, my family and I decided it was time for a vacation. Our first fall vacation. We scoured various vacation websites trying to find the perfect secluded place within a decent driving distance, as we were taking our two dogs (medium lab mixes) along this time and finally found the one: Julie's Serene Get-Away, a cabin nestled in a subdivision of Gaylord, Michigan.

Upon first pulling up into the driveway, we saw how much had gone into making this house a home. The details alone were spectacular: from embellished hardwood floors to the beautiful Christmas decorations to the heated floors, pathways and driveway to having everything one could possibly need, including extra coats and boots in the closet! Julie's cabin was cozy but not tiny, by any means. Our family of 6 adults and two dogs had more than enough room (and bathrooms) during our stay.

While the weather wasn't exactly what we imagined (it snowed every day we were there!), it turned out to be what we needed. We were able to get the full experience of living in a cabin: fall cabin life and winter cabin life. It was amazing watching the snow blanket everything in a pristine white throughout the mornings and melt away into bright oranges, reds and yellows by the afternoons.

We hiked the trails surrounding the home, took our dogs for several walks around the subdivision each day, "we caught a fish," we attempted to roast marshmallows but failed at getting a fire started (it was still too wet in the fire pit from the snow), built gingerbread Halloween houses and got to spend quality time together as a family. We even sat down to eat our dinners together without distractions like the television, phones or computers, which is a rare occurrence at our home.

We only saw one person during our entire trip, which was exactly what we were hoping. However, even though we were this secluded, we were still close enough to any amenities we needed; there were quite a few shops, restaurants and a Walmart within a five mile drive.

While the trip only lasted a total of four days, I'm thankful for the time there and being able to spend more time with my family, whom I rarely see between our work schedules.
We look forward to visiting again next year. As always, I took hundreds of photos and will post some of my favorites below. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed being there.

My Best Friend's Wedding

If you've ever seen the movie version of my blog title today, you'll know that "crème brúlée can never be jell-o" and that's okay because Stephanie is Shawn's jell-o (or maybe it's vice versa?). They were a perfect match for each other from the beginning. Though I hadn't known Shawn for long, I had actually known his mom first for a little while and heard how he treated Stephanie. Just from this and from what little I saw of the two interacting, I knew they were absolutely perfect for each other. I photographed their couple photos in the beginning, photographed the surprise proposal and just last week, I watched my best friend marry the love of her life.  I'm so incredibly thrilled for Stephanie and Shawn and I can't wait to hear of the things they accomplish together. I cannot wish them enough happiness in their lives. Congratulations Stephanie and Shawn!

Daniels Dream Day

I had the opportunity to photograph a friend's wedding this weekend. I'm so thankful they chose me to capture their dream day! Congratulations Katie and Justin! I wish you years of happiness.

Como collision

My final day at my internship with The Commercial Review ended with an accident. I had always wondered what happened to the elder man who was involved and hoped he healed quickly. A summer or so later, I was reading The Commercial Review as I had done frequently since leaving and recognized a name in the obituaries; I couldn't remember where I knew it from until the following day. I did not know him besides from the accident, but I felt the loss the same. Rest easy, Warren.

Emergency personnel escorted Warren D. Burress Sr. to a nearby ambulance after an accident at the intersection of Como and 200 South on Thursday.

Alexis Lamb, senior session.

I've known Alexis since she was in middle school. It's crazy to think she is graduating high school and moving on to college. She'll be attending Valparaiso this fall and I know she's thrilled. Here are a few photos from today's shoot!

Physical Assessments.

In 2012, I enrolled in a physical conditioning course at Ball State. We had pre-assessments to test how we were in the beginning and compared them to post-assessments after the course was over. I found my assessments and am thrilled to see what my assessment will be three years later.
