High school students gathered from across Indiana to participate in the biggest band competition of the summer. Bands competed not only against each other but the heat, as well. The crystal blue sky held a relentless sun that bore down from morning to dusk. Several students had been carried off the field with injuries or heat exhaustion. Despite the odds, the "Spirit of Muncie" band took first place after only the second major performance the group has had together since merging their two high schools, Muncie Central and Muncie Southside this summer.
